Shore jigging in the Canary Islands: control your metal lure

What a casting jig should do along the coast

In shore jigging, you cast a metal lure from the bank and retrieve it with changes of speed and rod movement. Casting jigs of 20–60 grams are one possible lure category for local spinning. This range is not a recommendation to cast every one of those weights with the same rod.

For a small practice box, two jigs of the same shape in different weights within your rod’s casting range are enough to begin. This helps you see what weight alone changes. Add another shape later. Even at the same weight, differently shaped lures can sink differently and respond differently to rod movements.

Compare weight and shape before colour

Jigs differ in shape, weight and colour. Slim shapes are designed for fast retrieves; other shapes and weight distributions change movement on the fall. Rigs and depths used for boat jigging cannot automatically be transferred to shore fishing.

Test a lure with a short cast into water you can observe. How much pull makes it respond clearly? Does it tilt sideways as it sinks? Keep colour unchanged for this exercise. A silvery lure with a blue back is one understandable starting point, for example, but it is not a proven successful colour for every Canary Island.

Count sinking time without confusing it with depth

Our sequence starts near the surface: after splashdown, close the bail and take up slack in a controlled way. Begin retrieving early. Only if the casting area provides enough open water should you extend the sinking phase in small steps on later casts. You do not have to touch bottom to fish effectively with a jig.

Two or four counted seconds are comparison values for your casts, not a depth measurement. Current, line bow and lure shape change its path through the water. Keep roughly the same casting direction and distance when comparing. If the line runs sideways across rocks, stop that attempt: more weight will not reliably fix an unsuitable line angle.

• First pass: retrieve early and cover the upper water.
• Second pass: allow slightly more sinking time only if the casting area is clear.
• When you contact obstacles: retrieve earlier or change casting direction.
• If wind or sea conditions deteriorate noticeably: reassess the location and end the trip if necessary.

Two retrieve styles are enough for an initial comparison

The first option is a steady, brisk retrieve with a few short rod-tip pulses. The second combines several reel turns with a short, controlled sinking pause. Compare a fast, jerking retrieve with short pauses where water depth allows.

Maintain contact with the line without holding the lure rigidly during the pause. Shorten sinking pauses in the final metres near shore so the lure does not snag on the approaching ledge. After a few casts, note the combination of jig weight, sinking time and speed. A following fish or contact is an observation, not yet a reliable catch trend.

Your standing position sets the limit, not casting distance

Before the first cast, plan how you would bring a fish from the water into a suitable landing net. A high ledge with no controlled landing option does not suit this introductory trip. Check leader, connecting knots and hooks regularly; replace damaged parts especially after rock contact. Do not climb down into the wave zone to recover a snagged lure.

The Canary Islands emergency authority specifically advises against dangerous fishing locations and warns of sudden changes in the sea. Check conditions, preferably go with someone else, and use suitable safety equipment including a lifejacket. An apparently calm moment between sets of waves is not reliable permission to step onto a wet rock ledge.
