Fishing in the Canary Islands: which spinning lures suit the shore?

In Tenerife, check which side of the coast first

The Canary Islands emergency authority notes that southern beaches are generally calmer than northern ones. This is broad guidance, not approval of a particular day or fishing location. Wind, currents and sea conditions can change quickly along the coast. Plan your trip around the current forecast and what you actually find on site.

A simple plan is worthwhile for the first visit: an easily accessible coastal stretch, an alternative destination and a clear return route. Standing directly beside breaking waves is not a necessary part of spinning. In rough conditions or during a coastal warning, avoid exposed rocks and breakwaters.

A lure box with different jobs

Spinning lures include minnows, surface lures, sinking sticks, soft shads and casting jigs. Their different running depths are particularly useful: you do not need five colours of one model, but lures whose uses you understand.

A minnow with a diving lip runs below the surface during retrieval. A surface lure stays on top and is animated through rod movement. Sinking sticks and metal lures reach deeper water; sinking time and retrieve must suit the seabed there. Soft shads add a softer alternative with replaceable bodies.

• Initially take only a few models with weights suitable for your rod.
• Keep spare leaders, pliers and line cutters within reach.
• Choose two clearly different retrieve styles rather than constantly tying on new lures.

Work with depth and speed

Our suggestion: start in the upper water and only explore deeper where you expect enough clear space beneath the lure. With a sinking lure, count the seconds until you start retrieving. Repeating the same cast lets you deliberately shorten or extend the sinking phase.

A heavier lure is not automatically better. If you can no longer work it in a controlled way, or the current pulls the line across rocks, another location is often more useful than extra weight. Plan the retrieve so you can control the lure all the way to shore; the last few metres are not an unimportant remainder of the cast.

Before the trip: three questions instead of ten secret tips

Is fishing with my method permitted on this exact stretch? Can I stand there safely today and get back? Which lures can I work sensibly there? Only after these three questions are answered does a beautiful coastal photograph become a usable holiday plan.

The Canary Islands fisheries authority provides information about licences and additional requirements. Use our regional rules and minimum sizes as well. Public access to the water does not automatically mean every fishing method is permitted.

Compare lure types on video

This Spanish-language tutorial presents five types of spinning lure. It supplements the lure guide; the channel is associated with the Rías Baixas area. The video is therefore not evidence of fishing locations or rules in the Canary Islands.
